SMA Announces 2023 Heritage Award Recipient Joe Harris

AUSTIN— Southwest Mover Association (SMA) is proud to announce Joe Harris as the 2023 Heritage Award recipient. The SMA Heritage Award recognizes a member who has made significant contributions to the moving industry and association.

“Joe Harris has been a longtime member of SMA for over 20 years and is a true leader and mentor. We are proud to be able to honor him with this award and thank him for his years of excellence in the moving industry,” said SMA Executive Director John D. Esparza.

Joe is a third-generation mover. His grandfather started Harris Moving & Storage Company in 1939 in the downtown Houston area. By age 13, Joe was able to proficiently back in a 40-foot trailer into a 9-foot-wide parking spot and drive a forklift. After graduating from Texas A&M University in 1982, he began working full time at Harris Moving and Storage.

Joe’s many accomplishments from this time include personally securing about 85% of the Houston area radio and TV broadcast, cellular telephone and large warehouses moves, moving former President George H. Bush 16 times during his political career and enhancing the company’s business development by bringing in new clients with his tenacious attitude.

SMA is a trade association representing the household goods moving industry in Texas. SMA is dedicated to enhancing the performance and profitability of moving companies and promoting a safe and reliable moving industry that includes strict adherence to state laws and ethical standards.
